Why You Should Not Represent Yourself In An Immigration Case

Blog

An immigration attorney represents clients in matters that concern immigration law, such as the issuance of green cards and visas. Additionally, they can help people who are endangered to receive protection through political asylum.

Although some people believe that they can handle an immigration issue on their own, it is often best to have professional legal representation. Here are a few reasons why.

Importance of the Results

The end results of an immigration case can have life-changing consequences. In addition to affecting you presently, the results can also affect you family members for generations to come.

As you consider whether or not you need to be represented by an immigration attorney, here are a few possible case results to keep in mind:

  • Potential to be indefinitely separated from a spouse or child
  • Potential to be reunited with loved ones
  • Deportation
  • Educational opportunities lost or gained
  • Employment opportunities lost or gained

The Complexity of Immigration Law

Immigration law can be quite difficult to understand, especially for someone without a law degree. In addition to the current number of variations in the law, the legalities that govern immigration are constantly changing. Thus, it can be easy to make a mistake during legal proceedings. Mistakes while completing paperwork or meeting timelines can have dire implications.

Also, the amount of legal jargon that you may need to understand or interpret can be intimidating.

Here are some of the negative consequences that are sometimes associated with legal inexperience when it comes to immigration law:

  • Revocation of status. The maintenance of a favorable status often depends on the timely receipt of important papers. A clerical error that results in a document being sent to the wrong address could jeopardize your immigration status.
  • Deportation. You could be deported for applying for immigration benefits for which you don't qualify or that don't apply to your circumstances.
  • Unnecessary expenses. Mistakes can be financially expensive because there are generally application fees associated with the filing of your immigration paperwork. When the paperwork has to be refiled, new fees are assessed.
  • Delays. If erroneous documentation does not cause the final results of your case to be negative, they can still delay the timely processing of your paperwork.

You can avoid issues with your immigration case by hiring an attorney who belongs to the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

If you are dealing with an immigration matter, schedule a consultation with an immigration attorney, like Diaz Shafer P.A, in your local area.

help for families going through immigration issues

My son has been best friends with a little boy from up the street for about two years. When his family came to me and told me that they may be leaving because of immigration issues, my heart broke. Those two boys spend so much time together and I knew that my son and his friend would be scarred for life if they were separated like that. I told the family that I would do some digging and talk with an immigration attorney friend of mine and see what I could find out. This blog was created to help this family as well as any others going through immigration struggles.
